Ahead of the November 18th gubernatorial election in Anambra state, Southeast Nigeria, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has endorsed the candidate of the All Progressive Congress APC Comrade Tony Nwoye, saying they are currently mobilizing voters for him.
Nwoye, was a one time National president of the student body, during his days as a medical student at the Enugu campus of University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
National Public Relations Officer (PRO), Bestman Okereafor, said in a statement on Sunday in Enugu that the adoption was done after a vivid background check-up of all the candidates running for the election.
Okereafor said that the leadership of NANS had therefore unanimously decided, deemed it fit and necessary to support our very own Comrade Tony Nwoye, an ex-President of NANS.
The statement read thus: “live or die do not subsist like a living dead; after much consultations among stakeholders and office holders of the apex students governing body, NANS, as regards who to give our total support to as regards the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election.
“NANS deemed it fit and necessary to support our very own Comrade Tony Nwoye, an ex-President of our beloved association NANS,’’ he said.
Okereafor also said that other factors considered before taking this decision included issues of age, experience and exposure.
“Considering the respective age; among all the aspirants for the election, Tony Nwoye is the youngest and if Macron can be France President no doubt Nwoye can equally be Governor in Anambra State.
“The National Assembly not too long ago passed a bill titled not too young to run bill, we see Anambra election as an avenue of test running this youth oriented bill in projection for 2019 General Elections.
“Also, as a former President of NANS we believe he understands where the shoe is paining Nigerian students and youths compared to other aspirants who are non comrades.
“Above other several reasons before taking the decision; we hereby also call on our compatriots in Anambra to cast a progressive vote for a trustworthy, obedient and youthful Nwoye as the executive Governor of Anambra State,’’ he said.
According to the statement , “NANS is, however, conclusively appreciative to the incumbent governor of Anambra for the appointment of some of our comrades as Senior Special Assistant (SSA) and Special Adviser (SA) even though it came very late.
