9 Year-Old Girl Killed, 24 Others Sustained injury In Onitsha Lorry Accident
Latest Headlines, News, News From The State Saturday, September 12th, 2015By Ignatius Okpara, Onitsha – The popular Afor- Nkpor, in New Tarzan area of the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State, was thrown into tension, as a nine-year-old primary school girl was crushed to death by a liquor haulage van, which also left 24 persons seriously injured.
According to an eyewitness, who wished not to be quoted, the deceased was said to be returning from an errand when she was hit by the heavy duty vehicle.
Our Correspondent learnt that her remains had since been deposited at Eyi Enu Hospital Morgue Ogidi, near Onitsha.
The Source said the lorry driver was shouting from afar to alert people that his brakes were faulty, hence, subsequently crashed into a spot where people gathered, and killed the girl on the spot.
“The driver could not control the situation and he immediately jumped out alongside the conductor” the Source said
“The lorry hit one L300 Bus; smashed the little girl and rammed into a hair-dressing saloon.”
The vehicle equally trapped an aged man under its tyre, while the owner of the saloon managed to run away, leaving her five-year-old child behind.
The lorry, with registration number, XA424-AAH (Anambra) had full load of assorted beer drinks when the mishap occurred.
AFRICAN EXAMINER gathered that men of the Federal Road Safety Commission FRSC could not be reached immediately after the incident occurred as their emergency lines could not go through when passer by sympathizer tried them.
