Kabiru Umar, alias Sokoto the re-arrested mastermind of the Christmas
Day bombing of St Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla, Niger State in
which 43 people were killed has been handed over to military authorities
for further interrogation on activities of the violent Boko Haram sect.
Umar, a Boko Haram chieftain, was re-arrested by a combined team of
State Security Service, SSS, operatives and soldiers from his hideout in
Mutum Biu, Taraba State on Friday and flown to the Abuja headquarters
of the SSS.
Umar was earlier arrested by the police but escaped in mysterious
circumstances in the hands of armed policemen who had escorted him
to his house in Abaji a distance of less than one hour drive Abuja, for
security search.
He was paraded before journalists later on Friday after initial interrogation
by senior SSS officials, according to reports by Premium Times.
It was gathered that Umar was moved to an undisclosed military
barracks in Abuja under the cover of the night to wade off any possible
strike by his colleagues to set him free.
His arrest is believed to unveil the mask on the sponsors of the sect as
well as avail security agencies detailed insight into their operations.
With the re-arrest of Umar and earlier arrest of Abu Qaqa, the sect’s
strategist, there is a belief in security circles that the days of Boko
Haram violence in Nigeria are numbered.
Umar was born on May 9, 1983 to the family of Umaru Jabbi of Gagi
village, Sokoto South LGA, Sokoto State. Upon the death of his father,
he was adopted by an uncle, Abubakar Dikko.
On completion of his primary education at Model Primary School, Gagi
town in 1996, Umar enrolled for secondary education at the Ahmadu
Bello Academy in 1996, but absconded shortly after following his anti-
establishment behavioural traits which he exhibited in school.
Umar’s attempts to train as a nurse however was abortive owing to his
poor attitude to his studies.
