The Federal Government has reiterated the need for traditional rulers in the
country to brace to the responsibility of ensuring co-existence and security in
their communities across the country.
The Federal Government noted that it have a multiplier effect on the nation at
large if every traditional ruler in the country can proactively live up to
expectation in this regard.
Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade who made the
observation receiving the Management of the National Institute for Cultural
Orientation (NICO) in his office expressed described the traditional institution
as a key factor in the nation’s quest for an enduring peace and security
situation.
Olubolade argued that the traditional institution, being the custodians of the
culture and traditions of the people must be woken up to perform one of their
primary responsibilities which, according to him, is to ensure peaceful co-
existence and security in their communities.
He expressed the willingness of the Ministry of Police Affairs to fully support
any effort aimed at mobilizing traditional rulers and local government
administrators to play more inclusive roles in returning the country to the path
of peace and security.
He also assured that the Ministry of Police Affairs will fully collaborate with
the National Institute for Cultural Orientation in its efforts to mobilize
traditional rulers and local government administrators, based on its belief that
those formenting crisis in some parts of the country live among the people
and can be curtailed by community leaders.
The Minister further reiterated the need for people to always be forth-coming
with reliable information to the police on suspicious activities of people living
amongst them, saying everybody is a stakeholder in the business of national
peace and internal security, without which no meaningful development can
take place.
The Executive Secretary of the NICO, Dr Barclays Ayakoroma had earlier
told the Minister that the Management of Institute was in the Ministry to
solicit assistance for its forth-coming National Conference on Culture, Peace
and Security.
According to him the conference which is expected to hold in Abuja soon,
will bring together traditional rulers, Commissioners in charge of cultural
affairs and Local Government Chairmen from across the country to discuss
their roles in promoting peaceful co-existence and national security among
the diverse people of Nigeria.
He commended the Ministry on the giant strides it has made in driving the
Police Reform Programme of the Federal Government and gave assurance of
the Institute’s continued readiness to partner the Ministry on programmes
where it deems relevant.
