United Offer £54m for Cavani

David Moyes’ sacking has opened the door for Manchester United to land Edinson Cavani in a club record £54m deal.Despite being managerless, United are determined to press on with their transfer business irrespective of who replaces Moyes, and they also have their sights on signing Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas and Southampton whizzkid Luke Shaw.

Reports show that United representatives flew to France last week to holds talks about Paris St-Germain striker Cavani. He had told close friends he was reluctant to join United because of their recent fall from grace.

But it is understood the club believe their decision to sack Moyes on Monday could convince Cavani to change his mind.

Uruguay star Cavani joined PSG from Napoli in a £40m deal last summer but has struggled to settle in France.

Boss Laurent Blanc has picked him out of position and Cavani is keen on finding a new club where he can operate in a more central role.

United are confident of luring him to Old Trafford but his possible arrival will raise fresh doubts about the future of Robin van Persie.

The Dutchman has suffered a miserable season though loss of form and injuries and is a summer target for Chelsea.United’s owners the Glazer family are flying in for a summit meeting tomorrow to sort out the current crisis at their club.

Directors Joel,  Avram and Bryan Glazer will meet with Woodward to discuss their next move in finding a new manager.

The Glazers are determined to be fully involved in the appointment of United’s new manager this time, having let former boss Sir Alex Ferguson hand-pick his own successor last time around.Fergie will be consulted but it will be a group decision this time, with United keen to install a new boss before the end of next month.

The Glazers will also discuss an overhaul of the squad and decide which flops are deemed surplus to requirements.

Meanwhile, United winger Adnan Januzaj has chosen to play international football for Belgium, according to coach Marc Wilmots.

Born in Brussels, Januzaj is eligible to play for Albania, Kosovo, Serbia and Turkey, while the FA hoped he would eventually opt for England through residency.
