Sunderland beat United to book League Cup Final against City
- Updated: January 22, 2014

Manchester United were knocked out of the Capital One Cup after an appalling penalty shoot-out against Sunderland at Old Trafford.
United had been set to make the final until two minutes from the end of extra time, but late goals from Sunderland’s Phil Bardsley and and Javier Hernandez for the home team sent the match to spot kicks. United had made it 2-2 on aggregate with Jonny Evans’s first-half header.
Seven spot kicks were missed as Sunderland triumphed 2-1 and will face Manchester City on 2 March.
Sunderland were much the better side in the second half, providing most of the attacking as United curiously seemed to be happy with hanging onto their lead on the night.
