The South Africa Football Association as well as Kaizer chiefs football club are likely to be sanctioned by the continent’s soccer governing body, Confederation of Africa Football CAF following spectators misconduct during Saturday’s CAF Champions League encounter with AS Vita at the FNB Stadium.
Violence began when a soccer fan invaded the pitch and threatened to beat a match official. This happened after a group of Amakhosi players swarmed around the match officials to voice their displeasure at their performance.
The CAF match officials were later escorted by security personnel to the dressing rooms.
Despite beating AS Vita by 2-0 Amakhosi still could not advance to the group stage of the tournament as they were beaten 3-0 in Kinshasa a week ago.
According to Article 151 in the CAF Rules and Regulations, the local football association shall ensure that law and order are maintained in the stadia and immediate and comply with and implement existing safety rules (FIFA and CAF Regulations, national laws, international agreements) and take every safety precaution demanded by circumstances before, during and after the match if accidents occur.
The rule states that National associations are held responsible for the behaviour of their supporters (especially with regard to throwing missiles and invading the pitch) and auxiliary staff.
However, it is not clear if the match commissioner mentioned any other misconduct during the match in his report.
