Eto’o Joins Everton, Sets to Face Chelsea On Saturday

Everton have completed Samuel Eto’o transfer after signing the free-agent striker penning initial one-year deal.

The former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker, who was released by Chelsea in the summer, passed his medical earlier Tuesday.

Eto’o, 33, has a clause in his contract which entitles him to a 12-month extension if he plays a certain number of games for Everton.

Blues boss Roberto Martinez is delighted by what is the club’s most high-profile signing since Paul Gascoigne and Eto’o snubbed a late bid by AC Milan to come to Goodison.

West Ham also wanted Eto’o, who was on Liverpool’s radar before they signed Mario Balotelli for £16million.

Martinez feels Eto’o can contribute goals to Everton’s attack this season and he managed 12 last season for Chelsea, despite not being favoured by Jose Mourinho.

Eto’o was keen to stay in the Premier League and could make his debut against Chelsea at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Martinez claims Eto’o arrives on Merseyside with a point to prove and still hungry for success, despite winning three Champions Leagues, four titles and seven cups.

“I met him and we had a very good chat about football in general and I was impressed about the hunger he still has,” said the Everton boss.

“For someone who has achieved nearly everything, he still has the desire he had at 15 when he went to Spain and showed what he could do. For many reasons he has got a point to prove.
