Croatia Striker Says ”It’s Weird To Play Against My Country, Brazil”
- Updated: June 7, 2014
Croatia striker Eduardo will be so torn when he faces Brazil that he plans to sing both national anthems.
The former Arsenal star, now at Shakhtar Donetsk, was born in Rio de Janeiro.
He took Croatian nationality in 2002 and has since scored 29 goals for his adopted country.
Hosts Brazil take on Croatia in the very first game of the tournament in Sao Paulo on June 12.
And Eduardo’s mother said: “He has said he will sing two anthems. He’s Croatian for work. But in his heart, he’s Brazilian.” She said.
The striker himself admits he will feel weird playing against the country of his birth.
Eduardo left Rio at the age of 16 after being spotted by Dinamo Zagreb and has played his club football in Europe ever since.
When asked about facing Brazil in the World Cup, he said: “I could never have imagined this situation happening and the huge coincidence.
“But it’s a pleasure to play in the opening game.
“It will be very strange to play a World Cup in your home country but in the shirt of another national team.”
