Swansea boss Garry Monk has accused Victor Moses and referee Michael Oliver of cheating after the Super Eagles winger was awarded a controversial penalty kick in Stoke City’s 2-1 victory on Sunday.

Monk said he was disappointed with referee Oliver’s decision to award Stoke the penalty which, according to him changed the game. He described the decision as a ‘’disgrace’’.

The Potters were awarded the spot kick  when Angel Rangel challenged Moses, but it looked as if the Nigerian – on loan from Chelsea,  went down easily.

‘’The penalty against us is a disgrace. It’s a disgraceful decision. Not in a million years is it a penalty and the problem we’ll have with it now is a lot of games we’re having this season a match-changing decision is going against us constantly and I don’t see anything being done about it.

‘’He (Victor Moses) should be punished for diving, it’s a clear dive which is cheating. He’s cheated the ref and then the ref’s cheated us for giving the decision that never was.

‘’I just think it’s a poor, poor decision and it’s cost us at a vital time where we’re just coming up to half-time – we should have been coming in 1-0 up and it’s a different game then, a different game plan for us second half.’

Monk also criticized Mike Riley’s response as the leaders of the referee‘s association, to issues concerning bad officiating.

‘’I’ve spoke to the referees about it and the association about it and I don’t hear anything from (referee chief) Mike Riley coming back to me at all, which I find poor leadership and the whole thing is becoming to mount up now which is becoming a very worrying situation. Monk said.

Swansea To Prevent Bony From Traveling to Sierra Leone For Fear of Ebola Virus http://africanexaminer.com/sports/football/swansea-to-prevent-bony-from-traveling-to-sierra-leone-for-fear-of-ebola-virus/ http://africanexaminer.com/sports/football/swansea-to-prevent-bony-from-traveling-to-sierra-leone-for-fear-of-ebola-virus/#respond Sat, 18 Oct 2014 05:04:26 +0000 http://africanexaminer.com/sports/?p=4858 Concerned about the spread of deadly Ebola virus, Swansea City manager Garry Monk has threatened to prevent Wilfried Bony from traveling to Sierra Leone when Ivory Coast visit for their 2015 African Nations Cup qualifier.

Monk is set to get tough in order to avoid Bony being thrown into an Ebola nightmare.

The West African nation has been at the centre of the deadly Ebola outbreak.

Monk said he would withdraw Bony from international duty to ensure his £12million striker, scorer of 25 goals last season, is not put in harm’s way.

He said: “We paid a lot of money for Wilfried, and you have to look after your assets.

“Our medical team and doctors will converse with him, which is the most important thing. If there are any concerns between us and we feel this could really be a problem then we would have to pull him out.

“I am not here to stop any player representing his country. But if you have an asset like that and there were major concerns the liability lies with us, not their country or federation.

“Players would have to understand and Wilf is a clever lad.”

The striker, along with Manchester City’s Yaya Toure and Newcastle’s Cheick Tiote are expected to join the rest of the squad for the crucial encounter next month.

The West African nation has been at the centre of the deadly Ebola outbreak.

Of the 4,500 deaths from the virus, 1,200 have come in Sierra Leone and 425 new cases were reported just last week.

FIFA Gives Nigeria a Four-Day Ultimatum http://africanexaminer.com/sports/football/fifa-gives-nigeria-a-four-day-ultimatum/ http://africanexaminer.com/sports/football/fifa-gives-nigeria-a-four-day-ultimatum/#respond Fri, 05 Sep 2014 01:40:20 +0000 http://africanexaminer.com/sports/?p=4743 World soccer governing body FIFA, has given Nigeria until Monday, 8 September to solve all controversies concerning the country’s football federation or risk being suspended afterwards.

In a letter sent to the Nigeria Football Federation NFF,  FIFA Emergency Committee stated that Nigeria will be suspended with immediate effect if anybody claiming to have been elected to NFF position on 26th August is occupying their office next week Monday.

FIFA had earlier announced through a letter sent to the NFF on 29 August that it would not accept the result of the NFF general assembly held on 26 August.

It would be recalled that some members of the NFF Executive Committee proceeded to hold elections in the absence of the federation’s president Aminu Maigari, who at the time was being held by security forces.

According to FIFA, NFF will be automatically be suspended if the new deadline is not respected until the board claiming to be elected vacates the premises of the federation and the NFF General Secretary is able to perform his work without interference.

2015 African Nations Cup: Ivory Coast Face Disqualification Due to Ebola Scare http://africanexaminer.com/sports/football/2015-african-nations-cup-ivory-coast-face-disqualification-due-to-ebola-scare/ http://africanexaminer.com/sports/football/2015-african-nations-cup-ivory-coast-face-disqualification-due-to-ebola-scare/#respond Fri, 29 Aug 2014 17:39:49 +0000 http://africanexaminer.com/sports/?p=4710 Ivory Coast will be disqualified from the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations if they forfeit their qualifier against Sierra Leone because of fears over Ebola.

The Ivorian government will not allow the match, which is scheduled for 6 September in Abidjan, to go ahead.

Ivory Coast said their options are “to relocate the game or forfeit”.

But a Confederation of African Football  spokesman told BBC Sport: “If a country forfeits one qualifier, they will be disqualified from the championship.”

Sierra Leone is one of six nations with cases of Ebola and the Ivorian government is concerned the deadly virus could be brought into the country.

In an attempt to minimise any risk, Sierra Leone have named a squad of players based outside the country.

Caf had said on Thursday that as far it is was concerned the game would be played in Abidjan as scheduled.

NFF Fire Report Out This Week http://africanexaminer.com/sports/football/nff-fire-report-out-this-week/ http://africanexaminer.com/sports/football/nff-fire-report-out-this-week/#respond Tue, 26 Aug 2014 04:19:36 +0000 http://africanexaminer.com/sports/?p=4681 Operatives of the Federal Fire Service have confirmed that that the report on the inferno that gutted the Abuja Secretariat of the Nigeria Football Federation will be made available to authorities this week.

In a chat with journalists at the scene, Assistant Controller General of the Service, Toyo Peter Adeoye, who made this known said that the incident was still being investigated.

He warned the public against acts that may pre-empt the outcome of the investigation.

“We are still investigating and we cannot come out with any conclusion for now. There are a lot of factors involved. I am sure of that, but I can’t tell you what the factors are for now because we are still investigating. We are calling on people to tell us what they know about the fire and we will make our report known to people the moment we are through.

Adeoye noted that questions will be asked despite the decision by the Nigeria Football Federation to clear the debries without the consent of the service.

“Let them wipe away whatever they like, we will still ask questions. We were here on the first and second days and we are still here today again just to make sure we get everything right. We are writing our report already and we will complete it this week by the grace of God,” He said.

A group the NFF senior officials have been accused of deliberately setting the football secretariat on fire to destroy valuable document.

Algeria FA Suspends Footbal Over Ebosse’s Death http://africanexaminer.com/sports/football/algerian-suspend-footbal-over-ebosses-death-to-give-deceaseds-family-100000/ http://africanexaminer.com/sports/football/algerian-suspend-footbal-over-ebosses-death-to-give-deceaseds-family-100000/#respond Mon, 25 Aug 2014 21:44:02 +0000 http://africanexaminer.com/sports/?p=4676 The Algerian Football Federation has suspended football indefinitely following the death of one of the league’s star players, Albert Ebosse, who was killed after being hit by a rock apparently thrown by his own fans.

Ebosse, a striker from Cameroon, died in hospital on Saturday night after being hit as players left the field following JS Kabylie 2-1 loss to USM Alger in the northern city of Tizi Ouzou. Ebosse had scored his side’s equaliser from a penalty.

The Algerian federation has ruled that $100,000 will be given to Ebosse’s family, roughly what he would have earned over the period of this contract. JS Kabylie’s players will also each donate a month’s salary.

The 24-year-old, the leading goalscorer in the Algerian league last season, was apparently hit by the rock hurled from a section of JS Kabylie supporters angry at their team’s defeat. Ebosse was struck as players walked off after the game and fans began throwing rocks at them. He was taken to hospital around 500 metres away from the stadium, where he died.

A police investigation has been opened into his death, the Confederation of African Football and the player’s club, JS Kabylie, said.

Algeria Football Federation President Mohamed Raouraoua said he hoped that “the perpetrators of this unspeakable act are severely punished.”

Ebosse joined Kabylie last year and became an immediate success, scoring 17 goals last season as his team finished second to USM Alger, the opponents on Sunday, in Algeria’s top flight.

USM Alger also offered their condolences. “JS Kabylie’s Cameroonian striker has lost his life after being hit in the head by something launched from the stands,” a club statement read. “This terrible news is saddening for football in our nation and in Cameroon and arrives like a bombshell.”

Ebosse’s body was transferred to a military hospital in preparation for it to be flown home to Cameroon, his club said.

Sports Minister, Keshi Settle for ‘Pre – Contract Talks’ As Maigari, Umeh Flex Muscle On NFF Election http://africanexaminer.com/sports/football/sports-minister-keshi-settle-for-pre-contract-talks-as-maigari-umeh-flex-muscle-on-nff-election/ http://africanexaminer.com/sports/football/sports-minister-keshi-settle-for-pre-contract-talks-as-maigari-umeh-flex-muscle-on-nff-election/#respond Mon, 25 Aug 2014 20:28:19 +0000 http://africanexaminer.com/sports/?p=4667 After weeks of delay, Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi and Sports Minister, Tamuno Danagogo have agreed on Monday to maintain “pre-contract talks”, while the former Green Eagles Skipper, remains in his current capacity.

The new arrangement which implies Keshi will be fully in charge of the 2015 AFCON Eagles qualifier matches in September is also to ensure that the team is in care of a particular manager while the matches and  talks last. The qualifier matches will end on November 19, 2014.

If the Super Eagles qualify for the African Championship to be hosted by Morocco, this might result to review of the latest agreement between Keshi and the Minister, as it expected the team will then face with new challenge.

The Nigeria Super Eagles are in the Group A which comprises: South Africa, Congo and Sudan. Their first match is with the Congo National team and it is slated for September 6 in Calabar and next is South Africa on September 10 2014.

Delay in resolving the Keshi’s renewed contract African Examiner gathered from Abuja might not be unconnected with the persistent power rows among the chief executive officers of the glass house, in particular between the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Aminu Maigari and his estranged Vice, Mike Umeh, both who claimed leadership of the football house.

The situation forced Keshi to open up last weekend that NFF was not serious and that he might walk away.

In the meantime, the NFF Presidential election which originally slated for tomorrow according to the electoral committee within less than 24 hours has been subjected to another round of controversy.

Latest report has it that the Pro-Maigari maintained that the exercise holds Tuesday, while Umeh faction is saying otherwise. Also, the election previously scheduled for Warri, Delta state has been shifted to Abuja.

The Secretary to the Federal Government of the Federation, Senator, Pius Anyim Pius disclosed Sunday that tomorrow exercise contrary to former arrangement would only be a congress to fix the date for election proper.

Unlucky Falconets Bow to Germany, as Referee Disallow Oshoala’s Clean Goal http://africanexaminer.com/sports/football/unlucky-falconets-bow-to-germany-as-referee-disallow-oshoalas-clean-goal/ http://africanexaminer.com/sports/football/unlucky-falconets-bow-to-germany-as-referee-disallow-oshoalas-clean-goal/#respond Mon, 25 Aug 2014 06:01:42 +0000 http://africanexaminer.com/sports/?p=4662 Lena Petermann scored in the eighth minute of extra time to lead Germany to a 1-0 victory over Nigeria to claim the under-20 Women’s World Cup at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium on Sunday. The game finished tied 0-0 after 90 minutes.

The victory is Germany’s third at this competition, after winning the event in 2004 and 2010.

The Super Falconets looked to have won the match in the 85th minute of regular time when midfielder Asisat Oshoala headed the ball across the line, but the play was called dead for offside.

Nigeria was the better team for much of the game, as the Falconets pinned the Germans in their own half for lengthy periods of time. Nigeria’s shots were dangerous, and its crosses constantly threatened the German defence.

But it was Petermann who broke the deadlock in extra time, firing home from close range past goalkeeper Sandra Chiichii for her third goal of the competition.

Forward Pauline Bremer of Germany got the play going, stripping Nigeria’s Gladys Abasi of the ball on the edge of the 18-yard-box. Bremer walked in to the penalty area and squared the ball to Petermann, who scored Germany’s 17th goal of the tournament.

The loss was Nigeria’s second in the final of the U-20 tournament, after losing 2-0 to Germany in 2010.

Nigeria came closest to opening the score in the first half. Oshoala had a glorious chance in the 22nd minute when she stole the ball from German defender Margarita Gidion, walked in on a breakaway, and sidestepped goalie Meike Kaemper before finding the side netting.

The tournament’s leading scorer Oshoala, by far the game’s best player, was denied another promising opportunity in the 38th when her teammate Loveth Ayila walked into her shot, deflecting it wide.

The game was 0-0 at halftime, with Nigeria directing nine shots towards target to Germany’s four.

Earlier on Sunday, France beat North Korea 3-2 in the third-place match. France’s centre half Aissatou Tounkara scored the winner in the 79th minute to lead the Bleuettes to their first podium finish at the U-20 Women’s World Cup.
