Mchunu to fight ‘Ultimate Warrior’ in Atlantic City
- Updated: December 30, 2013

AFRICAN Boxing Union cruiserweight champion Thabiso ‘‘The Rock” Mchunu will return to action against Garrett ‘‘The Ultimate Warrior” Wilson in Atlantic City, New Jersey, US promoter Kathy Duva has announced.
Duva, the CE of successful leading boxing firm Main Events, said the nontitle 10-rounder between Mchunu and Wilson will take place at the Resort International Hotel Casino on January 14.
She said the fight would be a co-feature to the battle between Curtis ‘‘Showtime” Stevens and Patrick ‘‘The Machine” Majewski. Duva said her tournament would be telecast on NBC Sports Network Fight Night.
The bout will be Mchunu’s second under Duva’s company and his second appearance on the NBC Sports Network.
Duva has a three-year promotional contract with the 25-year-old left-hander from KwaXimba, in Cato Ridge, near Maritzburg.
Mchunu actually made his debut under Duva’s company on August 3 when he outboxed ‘‘Fast” Eddie Chambers at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut. It was after that unforeseen victory against the vastly experienced former heavyweight US top contender that Duva signed up Mchunu.
Duva said the 31-year-old Wilson — from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — won many fans last month when he stepped up to the heavyweight division on three days’ notice to give undefeated prospect Czar Glazkov a load of trouble in their 10-rounder at Turning Stone Resort and Casino in New York. But Wilson lost that bout on points.
‘‘The outing was typical fare for ‘The Ultimate Warrior’, as Wilson showed fans outside of Philly why he is so popular in the City of Brotherly Love. He put on a breakthrough performance that was full of heart, attitude, toughness, and a hail of hard punches. Against Mchunu, Wilson gets another chance to make his mark on national TV,” said Duva.
Mchunu, the former undefeated South African and World Boxing Association Pan African champion, predicted that his win against Wilson would be ‘‘catastrophic”.
