THE Rivers State wing of the Action Congress of
Nigeria, ACN, an opposition party, and the ruling
People’s Democratic Party, PDP, are currently not on
the same page on the assassination of the Chairman
of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, in the state,
Julius Nwaofu.
Apparently piqued by the ongoing repression in
Ogoni, over a troubling banana plantation, ACN said
they are smelling a rat on killing of Nwaofu.
Rattled, the ruling party, PDP, has described the
assassination as an ill-wind that blows no one any
good.
George Ukwuoma-Nwogba, Publicity Secretary of the
ruling party in a statement to AkanimoReports said,
''PDP, condemns the murder of Julius Nwaofu, an
easy-going politician who committed himself to the
growth of democracy in Rivers state. We could not
have imagined this abrupt end to his sprawling life,
when the PDP-led administration in the state is doing
its utmost commitment to giving the people conducive
environment to excel in their professions.
“We condemn this backward step no doubt
engineered by hawkers of retrogressive wares. While
we sympathize with Nwaofu’s family, we trust that
security agents will do thorough investigation to bring
to justice perpetrators of this most heinous
bastardization of our sanity. We advise that
comments that would derail productive investigations
be avoided. The Rivers State Police Command has
competent men and materials to track down those
responsible, and we so challenge them''.

Continuing, the party said, ''in times like the moment, politics should be discarded for real
sympathy with those mourning. The PDP sees this time not as one for playing politics but which
calls for collective sympathy with the family. Politicians should mortify sentiments at such period
in honour of the dead and respect to those mourning the loss of their loved ones''.
PDP is therefore tasking citizens to be security conscious by co-operating with the police and
other law enforcement agents, adding that security is everyone’s duty and should be seen as
such.
While describing the assassination of Nwaofu as painful and unfortunate, ACN Spokesman, Jerry
Needam, said the opposition party was not comfortable with ''the rising rate of insecurity'' in the
state, describing it as a drawback on the progressive march of the state to catch up with other
civilized parts of the world.
''It is regrettable that certain elements and devils incarnate may have sworn to checkmate the
radical progressive political opposition in the state. But, they are incapable of stalling the
clamour for justice, equity and freedom in the state'', ACN said.
The opposition is therefore, calling for a probe into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the
seeming selective elimination of front line politicians in the state.
According to them, the PDP administration cannot justified the huge sums of money they are
spending on security, claiming that there are wanton loss of lives in Ogoni due seizure of farm
lands by government for a banana plantation.
ACN said they are holding top Ogoni players in the PDP for the renewed repression in the area.
''The situation in Ogoni is inhuman and wicked”, the party said.
