The presidential campaign has come and gone; Goodluck Jonathan had an
upper-hand as he traversed the nooks and crannies of Nigeria than other
contestants. Power of incumbency was at play; he had fat pocket and used
presidential jets, etc at his disposal.
The election proper followed; Goodluck Jonathan, as expected, won clearly but
may not have cleanly. There were some questionable vote counts, especially in
the eastern part of the country; some betrayed good opinions that even where
Jonathan would have won cleanly, the overzealous were at play. The one that
exposed the entire tale was the Imo election where Jonathan scored 1.4million in
a state that the entire votes cast for governorship where higher turnout was
expected, was barely half that figure. This remains a sore point of the entire
exercise.
The presidential swearing-in took place and the inaugural ball copy-catted USA
Barack Obama’s. While the ball went fine, socially, the swearing-in which took
place earlier at the Eagle Square, apart from the impressive acrobatic shows and
parades; it was scantily attended and observed as if we were mourning.
We thank God for all that. The Election Tribunals are now sitting but the
presidential win should not be upturned in spite of the recorded flaws because it
would be monumental cost to conduct fresh presidential election. Nevertheless
some state governors would not be that lucky as surely what happened in Ondo,
Edo, and Osun regarding 2007 polls would hit at least four states (Akwa Ibom,
Benue, possibly Bauchi and Kaduna) regarding 2011 polls.
Nevertheless, the interference in some areas and the ‘I-don’t-care’ attitude in
some of Mr. President in recent past and now should not be glossed over. For
instance before the elections, violence occurred in some parts of the country but
the only one that attracted the presidential look-into was the one (in Uyo) that
torched his Campaign Office there but which he may be unaware was caused by
PDP government there; he left the recurring Plateau, Borno, Bauchi etc
mayhems. The world is watching to see the outcome and how he would handle
the continuing mayhem in those other places.
Furthermore, the way Jonathan has kept quiet on the accusation that he
shielded former Speaker Bankole from EFCC does not speak well for him. The
Igbo nation is still watching on how he would correct their situation. The way he
now propagates zoning he never believed in shows some insincerity. There is no
sign that he would tackle and fulfill those election promises that include steady
power supply and security that are important to our national development.
He has not recanted the unnecessary unbanning import of items like textiles,
toothpick, bottled water, 15-year old vehicles, etc. How he makes up his new
cabinet would determine whether he would still grope. We wait and see.
