The House of Representative Committee on Interior has canvassed the need to
grant the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) autonomy to enhance
its performance.

The Committee also called for a review of the NIMC’s Act with a view to creating
an enabling environment for the Commission to run the National Identity
Management System (NIMS) project effectively.

Chairman, House Committee on Interior, Hon.Umar Bature made the observation
during the committee’s oversight visit to the NIMC’s corporate office in Abuja.

Hon. Bature argued that a special commission that has the mandate to create and
manage a National Database which can equally be used for other special
assignments like the general election should have no government interference and
should not be placed under the supervision of the Office of the Secretary General
of the Federation or any ministry.

He therefore maintained the commission should be absolutely independent, adding
that it should be made mandatory for all Citizens to register themselves with the
Commission and obtain a National Identification Number (NIN) for the basis of
having an authentic National Database in Nigeria.

He however expressed satisfaction at the level of the work done on the project,
noting that the standard of the Nigerian NIMS project is far ahead of most
European countries that are embarking on similar project.

The chairman also requested NIMC to ensure a speedy harmonization of all the
agencies that are currently issuing cards which will undoubtedly curb the current
security challenges, help the government in delivering social amenities, and
facilitate the development of the country’s consumer credit system as well as
other applications in the financial sector that will help alleviate poverty in the
Country.

Speaking earlier, the Director General of the NIMC, Barr. Chris Onyemenam
highlighted the importance of the NIMS project, its status so far as well as the
project’s challenges while making a presentation to the House Committee
members.

Barr. Onyemenam explained that the Card Issuance and National Identification
Number (NIN) are some of the deliverables that NIMC would use for verification and
authentication of individual’s identity.

He thanked the President and the entire Members of the National Assembly for
their support towards the success of the NIMS project.
